History

The Cuero Heritage Museum occupies a 1915 Italian Renaissance Revival building that served as Cuero's post office until the 1960s and stands within the Cuero Commercial Historic District. Its exhibits present a timeline of DeWitt County's seat beginning with the town's founding in the early 1870s, including the "Cuero Talks Turkey" display on the community's long association with the holiday bird. Much of Cuero's early growth followed the 1875 hurricane that destroyed the coastal port of Indianola, whose displaced residents relocated inland and brought their Romanesque and Revival architecture with them.
