History

Spur Memorial Cemetery was established as the permanent burial ground for the railroad town of Spur about 1910, though a few graves already existed on the site before that date. In the mid-1930s the State of Texas relocated here the graves of soldiers killed in the county's last Indian fight at Soldier's Mound, a few miles to the north, and WPA workers set that plot off behind a low rock ledge; an unknown soldier's grave is still honored each Memorial Day. Additional tracts were purchased over the years until the grounds reached roughly 34 acres by 1963.
