History
Espuela Cemetery is generally regarded as the oldest cemetery in Dickens County, tied to the pioneer community of Espuela—Spanish for 'spur'—that grew up near the headquarters of the Espuela Land and Cattle Company. When Dickens County was organized in 1891 Espuela briefly served as its county seat, and that summer the town supported stores, a hotel, a gin, a newspaper and other businesses. After the seat moved to Dickens in 1892 and the post office shifted to the new town of Spur in 1910 the settlement faded, and today the cemetery is essentially all that remains of Espuela.
