History

Rising Star Cemetery serves the town of Rising Star in southwestern Eastland County, which began in 1876 when six families moved west from Gregg County and settled the site. First called Copperas Creek when its post office opened in 1878, the community was renamed after a remark that it was 'rising star country' because it produced crops when neighboring land failed. The town grew with early 20th-century oil discoveries, and its large, active cemetery lies in the northeast part of town.
