History
The National Border Patrol Museum in El Paso is the only museum devoted to the history of the U.S. Border Patrol. It was established by a 1979 vote of the Fraternal Order of Retired Border Patrol Officers and incorporated in Texas in 1980, opening in October 1985 in the basement of the old Cortez building downtown. After its artifacts spent 1992-1994 in storage, the nonprofit built a new 10,000-square-foot facility at the base of the Franklin Mountains that opened in April 1994, with exhibits covering Border Patrol history from the Old West and Prohibition to modern operations.
