Western Technical College dates to New Year's Day 1970, when El Paso Trade School began training welders. Heating and air-conditioning courses arrived in 1971 and auto mechanics in 1975, and in 1979 the growing school renamed itself Western Technical Institute and gained national accreditation from NATTS, the agency now called ACCSC. Medical assisting and associate degrees in electronics, computers, automotive and HVAC followed in the 1980s and 1990s, the branch campus relocated to a new building in 2001, and the Western Technical College name was adopted in 2005. Since then the family-owned school, now in its fourth generation of local ownership, has moved into bachelor's degrees, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and an online MBA while keeping its hands-on trades programs, and it operates a 13-acre main campus on Plaza Circle and a branch campus on Diana Drive in northeast El Paso.
