History
The International Museum of Art in El Paso is housed in the W. W. Turney House, a Classical Revival mansion designed by architect Henry C. Trost and built in 1908 for state legislator, lawyer, and rancher William Ward Turney. Featuring a massive portico with Corinthian columns and often compared to the White House, the home was deeded to the city by Iva Turney in 1940 and leased to the museum, which formally opened in May 1947. The El Paso Museum of Art occupied the building until 1998, after which the International Museum of Art reopened there in 1999 and now displays more than 450 paintings and 25 sculptures.
