History

This marker records the site of an early home of Fort Bliss at Hart's Mill on the Rio Grande. Fort Bliss was first established in 1854 and named for Lt. Col. William Wallace Smith Bliss. After the post was flooded out at Magoffinsville, the army occupied the Hart's Mill site as its fourth location from 1879 until 1893, when the fort moved to its present grounds northeast of the city.
