History

Simeon Hart built his grist mill, El Molino, at the Pass of the North in 1849 after marrying Jesusita Siqueiros, daughter of a Chihuahua flour miller. It was the first mill in the settlement then called Franklin, grinding as much as 100 barrels of flour a day and supplying army posts across the Southwest. Hart built his adobe residence nearby in 1859. The Hart's Mill site later served as a home of Fort Bliss from 1879 to 1893, and the residence eventually became the La Hacienda cafe.
