History
The Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens at the University of Texas at El Paso is the oldest museum in El Paso, built in 1936 to mark the centennial of Texas independence. An academic outreach unit of UTEP, it focuses on the natural and cultural history of the Chihuahuan Desert and holds a permanent collection of more than 70,000 objects ranging from dinosaur bones to 20th-century items. Its surrounding Chihuahuan Desert Gardens cultivate over 600 native plant species in themed gardens demonstrating water-wise landscaping, with free admission to both museum and gardens.
