History

William Neese, a German immigrant who founded Warrenton and operated a general store, began building this stone house in 1869 using stone from a nearby quarry. Neese was killed by a thief at his store in 1872, and merchant F. G. Cordes completed the home, known for its upstairs ballroom, in 1894. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the oldest houses in Fayette County.
