History

The Schulenburg City Cemetery began as the Lyons family burial ground in 1834 with the interment of Clarissa C. Lyons, decades before the town of Schulenburg was founded. In 1879 Franz Russek sold three acres for $150 to formally establish the city cemetery, and additional land was added over time. A cemetery association managed the grounds from 1894 until 1995, when the city assumed oversight, and the site holds a Historic Texas Cemetery designation.
