History

St. James Missionary Baptist Church, founded in 1874, is one of the oldest African American congregations in Schulenburg. Its members first worshiped on the banks of a creek under the Rev. S.T. Grant before building a sanctuary, and the church became active in the Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention. When the city acquired the church's property in the 1930s, the building was moved to a site adjacent to Wolters Park, and a Texas Historical Commission marker was placed in 2009.
