History

The Fitzgerald Cemetery takes its name from Samuel Fitzgerald, who purchased the surrounding land in 1841 and is buried on it. Fitzgerald, listed among the county's early freeholders, was a slaveholder, and many of the people he enslaved who died soon after arriving were buried at nearby Mulberry Cemetery. The small family burial ground was documented by researcher Norman Krischke in a 1970 booklet devoted to the site.
