History
Cedar Cemetery, named for the cedar trees that once grew there, began as a family burying ground established by John and William Lewis, who settled the La Grange area in the 1830s; its oldest marked grave is that of Carl Huebner from 1857. In 1879 John and Ann Lewis deeded 1.25 acres to five trustees, formally creating what was first called the Lewis Community Cemetery, with an additional half-acre added in 1888. Cemetery records were kept in German until 1931, the association was reorganized as the Cedar Cemetery Association in 1932, and a Texas Historical Commission subject marker was placed at the site in 1997.
