History
The Holy Cross Lutheran Church cemetery at Warda serves a congregation organized on March 17, 1873, by eight families as the Holy Cross Parish of the Unaltered Augsburg Confession. The surrounding community was settled by Wendish (Sorbian) immigrants after A. E. Falke began buying land in 1867, and the village was named for Wartha in Saxony, his former home. Burials at Holy Cross date to June 1873, with a second cemetery established after the congregation relocated into Warda in the early 1880s; together the grounds hold more than 900 marked graves.
