History
The Shaw Cemetery, historically recorded as the Shaw Negro Cemetery, is an African American burial ground about a mile and a half south of Holman in southern Fayette County. Graves were typically marked with plain sandstone or with temporary markers from Black funeral homes such as T.M. Penn of Eagle Lake and Ward & Simmons Bros. of Weimar. Documented burials include seventeen-year-old Hy. Woolridge, interred in February 1913; by the time researchers surveyed the overgrown site in 1987, nearly all of the markers had disappeared.
