History
German businessmen organized the Galveston Garten Verein, a social and garden club, in 1876 and acquired the former homestead of financier Robert Mills. The club's octagonal, two-tiered dancing pavilion was built in 1880 and was the only structure on the grounds to survive the 1900 Storm. Declining membership after World War I led members to sell the property in 1923 to Stanley Kempner, who donated it to the city as Kempner Park. The pavilion, restored after a 1981 fire, is now managed by the Galveston Historical Foundation and used for events.
