History
The original house in this complex was built in 1870 by Dr. Ferdinand Steffens, a German emigre physician who used the property as both his residence and office. His son-in-law, master builder and contractor Edward Drewa, extensively enlarged and remodeled the house between 1895 and 1914, producing an architectural hybrid combining Queen Anne, Bungalow and Gulf Coast vernacular elements. The property was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
