History

The Ocean Star is a retired jack-up drilling rig built in 1969 in Beaumont for the Ocean Drilling and Exploration Company that drilled more than 200 wells in the Gulf of Mexico before being retired in 1984. Purchased from scrap by the Offshore Energy Center in 1995, it opened as a museum in April 1997 with $3.6 million in industry and individual contributions. Moored at a Galveston pier, the self-guided museum uses the rig itself and interactive exhibits to explain offshore drilling technology and safety.
