History
The building now housing the Pioneer Memorial Library in Fredericksburg was designed by architect Alfred Giles and built in 1882 of native limestone in the Romanesque Revival style, serving as the Gillespie County Courthouse until a new courthouse opened in 1939. After the old building was condemned in 1963, it was restored in 1967 as a library through a gift from Dallas philanthropists Eugene and Margaret McDermott. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1967 and listed on the National Register in 1971.
