History
The old Gillespie County Courthouse in Fredericksburg was built in 1881-1882 to designs by prominent San Antonio architect Alfred Giles, who was commissioned in November 1881 for a fee of about one thousand dollars. The two-story Italianate building of native limestone follows an H-plan with entrances on all four facades and cost roughly $23,000. It served as the county courthouse from 1882 until 1939, was named a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1967, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. After a renovation underwritten by Mr. and Mrs. Eugene McDermott, the building reopened as the Pioneer Memorial Library.
