The old Gillespie County Courthouse in Fredericksburg was built in 1881–1882 to the design of San Antonio architect Alfred Giles, a two-story limestone building erected by John Heinen and James Courtney for about $23,000. It served as the county courthouse until a new courthouse opened in 1939, then was restored in 1967 as the Pioneer Memorial Library. It was named a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1967 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
