History

Edwards High School grew out of Gonzales's public education for African Americans, which began in the 1870s as the Gonzales Colored School and was later renamed for principal George Edwards Jr. The campus was built out between 1922 and 1952 and served Black students from elementary through high school until it closed in 1965 following integration. The Edwards Association, formed in the mid-1980s, preserves the site as a community center and African American museum documenting the era of segregated education.
