History

The Church Street Section of the Gonzales City Cemetery was founded in 1838 as part of the county seat's early burial grounds, adjoining the older College Street cemetery. The section includes a potter's area and, along the south front corner, a common grave holding the reinterred remains of the town's earliest settlers. The cemetery complex holds Anglo, Mexican-American, and African-American burials tracing the community's growth from the days of the Republic of Texas.
