History

The Gonzales Memorial Museum and Amphitheatre was built in 1936-37 with funds from the Texas Centennial celebration and the Works Progress Administration, designed in the Art Deco style by the San Antonio firm Phelps and Dewees. Constructed of Texas shell limestone, the complex includes the museum, a reflecting pool, and an amphitheater seating about 500. It commemorates the 'Immortal 32,' the Gonzales men who answered the call to defend the Alamo and died there on March 6, 1836, honored by a bronze-and-granite monument by sculptor Raoul Josset.
