History
Pioneer Baptist minister Z. N. Morrell organized the first Baptist congregation in Gonzales in 1841, but it disbanded within a few years; a new congregation formed under Rev. Richard Ellis with nine charter members, formally organizing on July 31, 1847. Worship was held in the Masonic hall and homes until a sanctuary was built in 1854, replaced by a brick Gothic building in 1902. Deacon Thomas J. Pilgrim, associated with the church, had founded the first Sunday school in Texas; the Texas Historical Commission marked the congregation in 1997.
