History

The three-story Gonzales County Jail was designed by noted architect Eugene Heiner and built of native stone in 1885, with construction accepted by the county in 1887, and originally held up to 200 prisoners. It served the county until 1975 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places that same year. Complete with original cells and a rebuilt gallows, the building now houses the Gonzales County Jail Museum and the chamber of commerce.
