History
Kerr's Settlement was established in 1825 when James Kerr, a former Missouri state senator, was commissioned by empresario Green DeWitt to survey and found a capital for DeWitt's Colony near the junction of the Guadalupe and San Marcos rivers. Kerr and a small party built cabins along the stream that became known as Kerr's Creek while the townsite was laid out. After two American Indian raids in 1826 the group abandoned the site, and the colonists relocated for a time to a place called Old Station near the Lavaca River. A 1964 state marker commemorates the location as the first site of DeWitt's Colony.
