History

The Dewville Cemetery grew out of the older Sandies Chapel burial ground that served pioneers of Green DeWitt's Colony, with its earliest graves dating to the 1860s. The community of Dewville was named for brothers John Frank and Thomas M. Dew, who opened a steam-powered cotton gin on the site in 1885, and in 1897 the local Methodist congregation continued at Dewville under the old 1857 Sandies Chapel charter. Four pioneer Methodist ministers — A.A. Smithwick, T.G. Russell, James E. Vernor, and C.W. Elkins — are buried in the cemetery.
