History

Sandies Chapel Cemetery began as a burial ground for the family of pioneers Joseph and Catherine McCoy, settlers in Green DeWitt's Colony, and later served the surrounding Sandies community. A Methodist congregation organized here in 1842 and a cemetery was established across from the church in the 1850s, with the earliest graves dating to the 1860s. After a new Methodist church was built at nearby Dewville in 1897 and the school moved there in 1907, the cemetery was largely all that remained of Sandies Chapel by the 1930s.
