History

Dilworth grew up in 1889 when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway ran a spur from Shiner to Luling through northeastern Gonzales County; the town was named for banker G. N. Dilworth, who helped finance the line. By 1896 it had about 150 residents, stores, a gin, and a Methodist church, though it faded after its post office closed in the late 1930s. Dilworth Cemetery, also recorded as the Harper & Steemer Cemetery, remains from that railroad community.
