History

The Kokernot Cemetery near Big Hill, east of Gonzales, is the burial ground of the family of David Levi Kokernot, a Dutch-born settler who reached the area around 1830 and is remembered as one of the first Jewish residents of the region. A tall obelisk marking Levi Moses Kokernot's grave is visible from a distance on the private ranch land where the cemetery lies.
