History
The Devil's Rope Museum in McLean, opened in 1991, holds what is billed as the world's largest collection of barbed wire, housed in a former brassiere factory that once earned the town the nickname 'The Uplift Town.' Native Americans called barbed wire the 'devil's rope,' and after J.F. Glidden patented his design in 1874 the fencing spread across hundreds of thousands of miles, helping end the open range. The museum displays thousands of wire specimens and fencing tools alongside the Texas Route 66 Museum, which features more than 700 artifacts from the Mother Road.
