History

Gunter Cemetery serves the town of Gunter in southwestern Grayson County, a community that grew up on the former 25,000-acre Gunter Ranch. The town was named for cattleman and surveyor Jot (John) Gunter, who deeded land for the townsite in 1901, and it organized in 1902 when the St. Louis, San Francisco and Texas Railway reached the area. The cemetery holds burials of area families dating from the late 1800s onward.
