History
Oakwood Cemetery was Denison's first cemetery, established in February 1873 when the railroad town was only months old, having sprung up as the terminus of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway. John Percy is recorded as the first person buried there in 1873. By 1875 the cemetery committee had divided the ten-acre grounds among Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish congregations, the Masons and Odd Fellows, and separate sections for African Americans and a potter's field, and the Hebrew Mutual Relief Association secured additional ground a few years later. The city of Denison still maintains Oakwood, which holds thousands of burials.
