History

The Billy the Kid Museum is built around Hico's claim that the outlaw was not killed by Pat Garrett in 1881 but lived out his life as 'Brushy Bill' Roberts, who first made the claim in 1950 and died in Hico that year, days short of what the town says was his 91st birthday. Hico erected a Brushy Bill monument and opened the museum in 1987 to tell the disputed story of his escape and later life.
