History

The Hardeman County Historical Museum is housed in the former county jail in Quanah, a native-stone building begun in 1890 and completed in 1891 after Quanah became the county seat. The lower floor held the sheriff's office and living quarters while the upper floor held the prisoner cells. Jail operations were relocated in 1973, and the building was renovated by community effort in 1976 for museum use, with the upper-floor cells left intact.
