The Houston Museum of Natural Science was established in 1909 by the Houston Museum and Scientific Society to provide a free institution devoted to education and science. Its early collections were housed in the city auditorium, the Central Library, and a site at the Houston Zoo before construction of the current Hermann Park building, which began in 1964 and was completed in 1969. The complex includes four floors of natural-science halls, the Burke Baker Planetarium, the Cockrell Butterfly Center, and the Wortham Giant Screen Theatre.
