The San Jacinto Museum of History is housed in the base of the San Jacinto Monument, the 570-foot limestone obelisk completed in 1939 on the battlefield where Texas won its independence in 1836. The museum was created by a Texas State Board of Control resolution on September 22, 1938, and chartered that November as the San Jacinto Museum of History Association. Its collection holds more than 100,000 objects spanning Pre-Columbian Mexico, Spanish colonial life, the Texas Revolution, and the Republic of Texas.
