History

Joseph Ehlinger (1792-1845), a native of Alsace, served in Captain William J. E. Heard's company at the Battle of San Jacinto. He held a land grant in Fayette County, where his family settled after his death and where the town of Ellinger-an anglicized form of his name-was later established. His marker stands in Houston's Founders Memorial Cemetery.
