History
The building at this site began in 1910 as a county schoolhouse and was later remodeled by noted Houston architect John F. Staub to house the Forum of Civics, a civic-improvement group founded by philanthropist Will Hogg to encourage city planning and beautification. The Forum sponsored the citywide planting of crepe myrtles, roses, and shade trees. Since 1942 the River Oaks Garden Club has owned the building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The state historical marker was erected in 1964.
