History

Founded in 1844 on West Dallas Street, Beth Israel Cemetery is the oldest Jewish burial ground in Houston and in Texas, predating the city's first synagogue by a decade. It grew from the Hebrew Benevolent Society organized that year under Lewis Levy and was the seed from which Congregation Beth Israel developed. Prominent Houston families such as the Levys and Sakowitzes and philanthropist Ben Taub are interred here, alongside the Art Deco Temple of Rest Mausoleum designed by architect Joseph Finger. A Recorded Texas Historic Landmark marker was placed in 2008.
