History

St. John United Church began among German and Swiss immigrant farmers in the Vollmer (later White Oak) community of northwest Harris County, who gathered for worship by the 1860s and formally organized as St. John German Lutheran Church in 1872. The Gothic Revival frame building marked here was erected in 1891, and services were conducted in German until 1940. The historic church was moved to Sam Houston Park in 1968, and the Texas Historical Commission placed the marker in 1988.
