History

Felix Tijerina (1905-1965), born in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, immigrated to Texas as a child, worked his way up from busboy, and in 1937 opened the first Felix Mexican Restaurant, which became a beloved Houston institution. A leader of LULAC Council 60, he served as the organization's national president from 1956 to 1960 and championed education through the Little Schools of the 400, which taught Spanish-speaking children a core English vocabulary before first grade and helped inspire the later Head Start program. His marker was erected in Montrose in 2009.
