History

Established in 1834, Lynchburg Cemetery is one of the last remnants of the vanished town of Lynchburg, founded by Nathaniel Lynch, who received a Mexican land grant near the meeting of Buffalo Bayou and the San Jacinto River after arriving in 1822. When Lynchburg expanded in 1855 the one-acre cemetery became Block 42 of the town. It is the oldest known burial ground of the community and holds early settlers, veterans of the Mexican War and Civil War, and Nathaniel Lynch himself; the marker was placed in 2006.
