History
The De Zavala Cemetery holds the reinterred remains of Lorenzo de Zavala, the first vice president of the Republic of Texas, who died of pneumonia at Zavala Point in November 1836 and was buried in his family plot there. Tides, erosion, and ship wakes along Buffalo Bayou threatened the original graves for more than a century until the bodies were moved in the 1960s to the present site at the San Jacinto Battleground. The cemetery is also said to hold Mexican general Manuel Fernandez Castrillon, whom de Zavala honored with burial after the Battle of San Jacinto.
