The Center for Advanced Legal Studies opened its Houston school in 1987, holding its first classes on February 23 after receiving a license from the Texas Education Agency, and it has taught paralegals exclusively ever since. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board authorized its degree programs in 1992, and in 1998 its paralegal program won approval from the American Bar Association. CALS began offering hybrid courses in 2009, and in 2012 it asked to withdraw voluntarily from ABA approval (which lapsed in 2014) because the ABA then required some in-classroom hours and the school wanted to go fully online, which it did in 2013. Since then it has earned accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (2020), launched a Bachelor of Arts in Law and Business in 2024, and regained ABA approval in February 2026.
