AIU's story starts in Lucerne, Switzerland, where Jack and Helen Barnette of Atlanta launched a fashion school in 1970 under the name American Fashion College of Switzerland; branches in Atlanta, London and Los Angeles followed over the next decade and a half. New owner Steve Bostic gave it the American InterContinental University name in 1996, and five years later it passed to Career Education Corporation, the for-profit operator now called Perdoceo Education Corporation. AIU opened its Houston campus in the Westchase area in 2003; the building was badly damaged by Hurricane Ike in September 2008 and reopened after remodeling in February 2009. Today the university, headquartered in Chandler, Arizona, and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, teaches most of its students online, with Houston among its few physical campuses.
