Chamberlain University traces its lineage to the Deaconess tradition in St. Louis, where the Evangelical Deaconess Society opened Deaconess Central Hospital in 1889 and later a Deaconess School of Nursing. DeVry Inc. (the company later known as Adtalem Global Education and now as Covista) acquired the school and renamed it Chamberlain College of Nursing in 2005, and it later became Chamberlain University. The Houston campus on Equity Drive was its first in Texas, followed by a second Houston-area campus in Pearland that began classes in September 2014 and later sites in Irving and San Antonio. In 2017, after many recent graduates failed the national licensing exam, the Texas Board of Nursing for a time barred Chamberlain from enrolling new students in Texas, and the Texas campuses today focus on the Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
